   The integration of nanomaterials into macroscale functional assemblies is vital for their practical applications. This presentation reports a rapid and facile crosslinking methodology to fabricate 3D biocompatible graphene oxide monolithic (GOM) structures by covalent chemical bonding. Our developed method can form a crosslinked GOM within 1 minute under mild conditions in the presence of a traditional epoxy curing agent, poly(oxypropylene) diamine (D400), which functions as a crosslinker. Both experimental study and molecular dynamics modelling confirm that the ring opening reaction between GO epoxides and diamines is the driving force for the fast formation of this stable GOM. The resulting GOM offers a potential scaffold for tissue engineering owing to its highly inter-connective porous structure and biocompatibility.

We have demonstrated that the integration of GO into a functionalised monolith can be achieved in a fast way and at a large scale and the monolith can be readily converted to reduced GO by either heat treatment or chemical reducing agents. This work has provided new insights into the reaction mechanism of covalently crosslinked GOM structures, which may pave a new way for the rational design and versatile production of graphene based materials.

Biographic Details

Xiaojuan Hao is a senior research scientist and Team Leader in CSIRO Manufacturing. She joined CSIRO since 2006 after she finished two postdoc positions in the University of Melbourne and the University of New South Wales, consecutively. She has long term collaborations with Chinese colleagues in the biomaterials fields. Her research interests include RAFT polymerization to prepare various structures, nanomaterials such as gold and ceria nanoparticles and quantum dots, biomaterials and medical devices, carbon materials (CNTs and GO), and imaging contrast agents, etc.

郝晓娟, 2001年获澳大利亚新英格兰大学高分子化学博士,现任澳大利亚联邦科工研究组织高级研究科学家和团队领导者。她先后在墨尔本大学和新南威尔士大学完成两个博士后任职后于2006年加入联邦科工研究组织。她在生物材料领域与中国同事有着长期合作。她的研究领域包括应用活性自由基聚合技术(RAFT)制备各种高分子结构,纳米金粒子和量子点,生物材料和医疗器件,碳素材料(碳纳米管,氧化石墨烯和富勒烯),以及医用显影剂等。
